What Is A Cataract?

A cataract occurs when the natural clear lens turns cloudy, usually due to age.

Just like a cloudy lens in a camera, the cloudy lens in the eye causes images to be cloudy and blurry. This makes reading and seeing street signs difficult

In addition, cataracts cause glare and halos, specially at nighttime, which can be an impediment to driving.

Laser Cataract Surgery

Laser Cataract Surgery

Laser Cataract has several advantages:

– Less inflammation
– Faster recovery
– Treatment of astigmatism at the time of surgery

Using a femtosecond laser for cataract surgery involves a scan of your eye followed by a real-time computer-assisted surgical plan (as in the image). This plan can be modified by the surgeon. Once the plan is set, the laser performs the planned steps with great accuracy and speed. The whole process usually takes 1 minute or less.

What Type of Intraocular Lenses (IOL) Are Available?

Monofocal Lens

This is the standard IOL and it is set for one distance, usually distance (far) vision. Glasses are needed to see near, like reading and seeing your phone.

Multifocal Lens

This lenses divide the images that go into your eyes into 3 segments: distance, intermediate and near. Their goal is to provide independence from glasses at least 90% of the time. The downside is that they may cause glare, halos and starbursts around lights.

Extended Depth of Focus Lens

These lenses are similar to multifocal lenses, but they have less risk of developing glare, halos and starbursts around lights. In exchange, the near vision may not be as sharp as with multifocal lenses.

Toric Lens

Toricity is a feature that is added to any lens. It is used to treat moderate to severe astigmatism. The femtosecond laser can also be used to treat mild to moderate astigmatism.

Light Adjustable Lens

This is the most technologically advanced lens available. What sets this lens apart from the rest, is that its power can be enhanced up to 3 times after the cataract surgery with the goal to provide the best vision possible.

This lens is ideal for Blended Vision, also called Monovision. This is when one eye is customized for distance vision, and the other eye is customized for intermediate to near vision. This allows for significant independence from glasses with minimal risk of glare, halos and starbursts.
